History James Fowlds (1849-1915) became a master chairmaker by the age of 21 in Lambeth. As was usual for Victorian times he produced a large family of 14 children. Gradually expanding his activities from a workshop in East St. in Walworth SE17 he opened 3- retail shops 700 Old Kent Rd, 122 Old Kent Rd, and 333 Garratt Lane, Earlsfield. In those days there was no mass production so, most furniture shops made their own furniture locally. This required a range of different skills, upholstery, cabinet making, polishing, cane and rush seating.

The First World War put a temporary halt to all his activity with the loss of so many men.  Things began to return to normal and Albert Victor Fowlds (1889-1969) on his return from the war resumed upholstery manufacturing, eventually locating at the companies present headquarters in Addington Square Camberwell in 1926.

Albert Frederick Fowlds b. 1915 started work at 14 years of age and continued the business and again the Second World War intervened. Utility furniture made to government standards was made.

Robert Fowlds (Bob) b. 1947 has kept the tradition and is today managing the business.  The company is proud of its record and today is continuing to deal with a wide range of upholstery.
